Muscat and Oman was ruled by the Al Bu Said dynasty under Sultan Said bin Taimur, who maintained traditional rule with British support and influence. The coinage represents the final decades of the old sultanate before the 1970 palace coup that brought Sultan Qaboos to power and began Oman's modernization.
